Well the first week of school went fairly quick. Sophia loved being in school all day and now likes her teacher and is working hard.
Luke loves school, loves his teachers and is basically loving life. He has block teaching for this year so there are 4 teachers each specializing in specific area. The kids stay in the same class but the teachers rotate. Luke's class also has an extra teacher that acts as an intervention specialist and works with the kids in the class that need extra help. It is a great experience for Luke having his second year in this type of class. One of his good friends is a girl named Erin that has down syndrome and Luke has assigned himself the job of looking out for her for the second year in a row.
Luke's first football game is this Saturday at 10:30 am at Osborne Park in Willoughby. Unfortunately we are expecting rain all day. We will take pictures and post an update after the game. Go Redhawks!!
Claudia had a rough first week of middle school with much anxiety and stress over changing classes and opening her locker. She went to school on Tuesday ready to have a better week. She likes school and has now gotten the routine down.
Tuesday did not start out great in the Willoughby/Eastlake school district. As some of you that are local may have heard we had an incident at the high school with a student bringing a gun to school and shooting a trophy case and the ceiling. The district was really amazing and once it was known that the student had a gun not only the high school, but the whole district had a lock down. Luke and Sophia were told at school that it was a drill and Sophia was excited because her whole class got candy from the teacher for doing such a great job.
Claudia attends Willoughby Middle School which is located next to South High where the incident occurred. Because of the proximity the middle school was on lock down for 30 minutes till they had the student removed from South. Claudia's school also told them it was a drill but with the days of cell phones, texting and parents who had children at both the middle and high school word travelled fast. Claudia knew what happened but seemed to handle it very well.
I was really happy at how well the district handled the situation and was impressed with the fact that the two principals at the High School were able to talk the student into surrendering after the second shot. The major debate is now whether we should have metal detectors at the schools. Parents are pushing for it and I can't say I disagree. Our district is normally a pretty safe one and one this was not expected in so maybe all the schools should have them. Two days after this incident a student went to Orange High School with ammunition and had a gun at home to use it with. I guess it does not matter where you live or where your kids go to school these days.
Well that is our update. Hope everyone is enjoying the peace of back to school.
